The trajectory of the Food Technology diploma courses at the College of Technology Kandy

The Food Technology Diploma course was launched at the College of Technology, Kandy in 2009, and enrollment was restricted to students who had completed NVQ Level 3/4 courses as bakers, cooks, and fruit and vegetable processors.

However, by 2015, in addition to students who had passed the relevant NVQ Level 3/4 courses, the recruitment of students who had passed the G.C.E. Advanced Level in the Biology or Biosystems Technology streams also commenced.

As a result, the number of students enrolled in these courses increased significantly, and by 2017, the NVQ Level 6 Higher National Diploma course in Food Technology was also launched at the College of Technology, Kandy.

By conducting the NVQ 05 National Diploma in Food Technology and the NVQ 06 Higher National Diploma courses in parallel, steps have been taken to facilitate the entry of nearly 1,000 diploma holders spanning approximately 27 student batches into various jobs within the food production sector. Some of them have already completed degree and Master degree courses in food technology and have moved into high-level employment.

Furthermore, considering the potential within this field to create new entrepreneurial opportunities, it has also been possible to produce diploma holders who have become entrepreneurs.

"As part of the journey exploring various paths within this field of education, every student is required to conduct a mini research project and submit a research dissertation in order to successfully complete the Higher National Diploma course."

Arrangements have been made to launch a magazine titled "Food Tech" starting in 2025, featuring articles based on the innovations and research experiments conducted by the students. Concurrently, an annual program named "Cibex" has been organized to showcase prototypes of all their new products.

Through all these efforts, we have demonstrated the heights to which a specific field within technical and vocational education can be elevated, provided there is the necessary discipline, restraint, and dedication. There are no limits to this; therefore, we will continue to move ever forward.
